Code switching is the ability to switch your tone of voice based on your setting. One might talk in a more casual tone with their friends and more proper with a teacher. For example, in the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Calpurnia speaks properly with the Finch family and loosely/casual with the people at her church. One must be smart to code switch because it shows you are aware of your surroundings and you know how to act according to your environment. Jem and Scout are confused when they hear Cal talk to the other people of her church. They had only ever heard Cal speak to them with her educated and sophisticated voice, and at that moment she spoke with a slang accent to fit in with the people of her church. Code switching is a very important skill that can be used today. Speaking in a more sophisticated tone could be the difference between getting a job and being rejected. It can also help you not to stand out in a crowd which could affect your appearance. Being observant has an important role in code switching. Overall, code switching is vital skill needed to fit in with a particular crowd.
During Catholic Schools Week we watched a Youtube video titled “What’s Invisible? More than you think - John Lloyd.” Based on my prior knowledge, I was aware feelings and emotions are invisible. However, John Lloyd stated the things we cannot see are also the things we cannot understand. This statement adds so much more to what is invisible such as gravity, the human genome, and time. From this one statement, my mind was blown! This had me think of all the things I cannot see, and how much I do not understand. As John Lloyd continued to explain his beginning statement, I began to get a better sense of what is invisible. Everything is invisible, except for matter. The video ended with Lloyd’s conclusion. His conclusion consists of two questions, why are we here? and what are we here for? These questions had me think long and hard to myself. I came to realize I had no answer, and that I have to continue on with life and try to discover why I am here. But, I also thought and came to think, does ANYONE no why they are here? Perhaps we learn when we die or discover as we age. Lloyd’s words of wisdom have excited me for the rest of my life and inspired me to live the remainder of my life more attentively.
