This week in class we read and discussed the story, "Lamb to the Slaughter" by Roald Dahl. This short story was about the break up of a happy couple. However, this certain break up takes a plot twist when the lamb is slaughtered. The Maloney's are a happy couple during what seems to be the 50s. Mrs. Maloney is waiting for the return of her husband who she loves so much. Mr. Maloney returns nervous and eager to drink. After chugging two glasses of whiskey, Mrs. Maloney says he has bad news for his wife. The story does not include any details of the conversation that occurred, but only the shock Mrs. Maloney was in. Despite the devastating break up Mrs. Maloney proceeds to serve Mr. Maloney as if nothing had happened. She then went down to the basement to get the leg of a lamb she was going yo cook. When she returns, she finds her husband staring out the window with his back facing her. Out of rage and fear, she decides to beat her husband on the head with the leg of the lamb. She tries to play it off by making herself believe she did not do it. The detectives and police officers that show up at her house do not suspect her at all. On top of that ,she serves her guests the murder weapon for supper. The Lamb is the wife's innocence which is partially murdered by the husband. Her innocence is also murdered when she decides to kill her husband. |
